My Bisk Internship Experience

| Sep 19, 2022 4 min read

By Vivek Gogia, Marketing Analytics Intern

It’s been two remarkable months of my Marketing Analytics internship with Bisk. I have cherished every moment working with data that was involved in marketing performance optimizations — something that I am passionate about and have been able to further develop and grow my skills during my experience with Bisk.

Bisk partners with leading institutions to deliver online degree and certificate programs to learners around the world. They provide the resources, expertise, and technology to help institutions grow as well as allowing students to thrive. Through their suite of online program management services, they have supported more than one million enrolments for universities such as Villanova University, Michigan State University, Florida Institute of Technology and University of South Florida.

Marketing Analysts help companies produce reports, spot patterns, collect data and collaborate with others. As an intern, I help unlock critical data and information, drive analyses and insights, set up reporting and dashboards and derive improvement plans.

I have been part of three types of analytics the Bisk Marketing team uses to drive their decision making:

  • Descriptive analytics, which tell us what has already happened
  • Predictive analytics, which show us what could happen
  • Prescriptive analytics, which inform us what should happen in the future

My responsibility is to work alongside a very talented Director, Kathleen Doyle, to use data to help improve marketing performance through analysis and report creation (for increased visibility on performance impactors). I am thrilled to work with her and am learning more every day as she gives me the independence to complete analysis and projects that involve data from multiple areas of the business such as Marketing and Sales. She has also allowed me to collaborate with leaders in Enterprise Information Management which has increased my knowledge and experience in analytics and with creating reports and dashboards using Power BI, Salesforce, Excel and Google Analytics.

Interns are a work in progress, and we are bound to be a little rough around the edges. My intern experience taught me it’s okay to make mistakes and to not be afraid to ask questions. The purpose of an internship is to grow and learn, so by the time you have a full-time job, those mistakes won’t be made again. It did not take long for me to understand that my supervisor and team members were not only there to help — but wanted to genuinely help me and watch me succeed. I am also thankful to my professors who gave me the opportunity to work on real life business problems which further prepared me for this internship.

The Bisk Team is a welcoming and inclusive team. One of my internship highlights was CEO Mike Bisk introducing me to the entire Bisk team during their company-wide Town Call. It felt great to be recognized by him and allowed me to connect with additional colleagues and build my networking portfolio.

Along with my team for going above and beyond and taking an educational approach to teach me new skills and trust me with report development and analysis, I would also like to thank the SVP of Marketing, Rustam Irani. Just one conversation with him changed my whole mindset about Marketing. He talked about his past work in the marketing field which really inspired me and made me think out of the box to find solutions.

My advice for any intern — or even someone starting in a new job — would be to network and go the extra mile to reach out to colleagues from other departments. You never know what that connection will mean to you or them and the reason you’re remembered for your positivity and work ethic.
